Amazon launched its subscription video-on-demand and streaming service Prime Video in 2006. Originally called Amazon Unbox, the service has now grown to include an expanding library of titles and original films and television series produced by Amazon Studios.

In 2016, Amazon split Prime Video from Amazon Prime, and shortly after, the service launched worldwide (except China, Cuba, Iran, and North Korea). In 2017, the streaming service won its first Academy Award for its original movie, Manchester by the Sea.

You can watch Prime Video on Amazon Fire-branded devices, Roku, video game consoles, and Smart TVs. In 2017, Amazon released a Prime Video app for Apple TV, and in 2019, added Chromecast support for the Prime Video app.

Prime Video has also acquired the streaming rights to the NFL'sThursday Night Football, UK rights to Premier League soccer matches, and the Hollywood studio MGM. In 2021, Prime Video made a deal with Universal Pictures to bring Universal movies to the service, as well as future theatrical releases four months after their release on Peacock.

As of April 2021, Prime Video has over 175 million users.
